TONG WU
China

Trace of flowing time

“The material for this work comes from the fragments of demolished houses in my hometown. With China's rapid urbanisation, many old buildings have been demolished, including even some ancient buildings that should be protected. I collected their fragments and linked them with my memories of life in my hometown, trying to recreate my impression of my hometown – a peaceful Asian town. Even though these are just some parts, they can be a kind of memorial.”

Material

wall fragments, glue, leaves, stems, petals, watercolour, copper, sterling silver, stainless steel needle

I used tile ash, cement, steel slag powder, lime powder, putty powder, gypsum powder, and mineral powder to simulate wall materials.

Technique

I grinded leaves, stems and petals as dyes for dying works to show the wall texture that had been eroded for many years.
