ALAIN ROGGEMAN
The substance of black
The substance of the colour black lies in its inner density and silent gravity. Far from being a mere absence of light, black carries a concentrated presence that can either conceal or reveal, erase or define. It shapes space with paradoxical power: it can flatten a surface or carve out depth, silence a composition or anchor it with intensity. Black is not seen as an emptiness, but as a fullness – a space where meaning is condensed and emotion is gathered.
Black encompasses a wide emotional spectrum – mystery, power, elegance, austerity, sadness, transcendence, and invites introspection as it removes distracting elements. Its substance evokes the origin before form appears and the boundary where form dissolves. Black becomes both the boundary and the beginning.
