Burning rituals: from flame to form
This project uses jade-like candles to take viewers into a ritual of focus and emotional immersion, with the melted base of the candle transformed into jewelry.
With the rise of secularization, jade is now mostly understood as a decorative or traditional material, while its ritual significance has gradually disappeared from everyday life. In contemporary art and jewelry, jade is often reinterpreted symbolically. Here, the fleeting process of flame and time is distilled into tangible, lasting jewelry that maintains the tension between transience and permanence, reawakening the spiritual essence of jade in the present.
Material: silver, jade
Technique: wax casting, jade carving
Hao Zheng’s process-oriented practice explores the ritualistic spirit of ancient objects and their reinterpretation in contemporary narratives, inviting participants to build a spiritual connection with material traces.
He completed his MA in Jewerly and Related Products from Birmingham City University, School of Jewelry in 2025.
