CARMEN ROMERO, Argentina

Excess luggage, brooch

Whether we travel near or far, wherever we go, we all carry our identity with us – our origins and our roots. We cannot leave our own history and distinctive features behind, nor should we. When we travel with an open mind, curiosity and respect, we connect the new and unknown with our own heritage; this enriches the travellers and their destination – and the world as a whole. It promotes understanding and integration. In the soul of objects, traces of our past and present can be found and allowed to carry newness within them.

Material: handmade paper, silk, alpaca

Technique: freshly moulded paper pulp, construction

She lives in La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is a member of the “Joyeros Argentinos” collective. She has been involved in contemporary jewelry design since 2008. She chooses textiles as her material and means of expression, using natural fibres and also waste plastics. Since 2020, she has been obtaining and processing paper from various plants. In her work, she addresses themes of contemporary communication: the tendency towards isolation, the attachment to design narratives and media manipulation. Handmade paper allows her to express her message in many ways. She is concerned about naivety and vulnerability of the individual in the face of technological devices that try to replace reason, originality and human creation, but are in fact tools of exploitation and extractivism. She believes that art enables alternative perspectives, attracts attention and stimulates reflection.
