VETRINJSKI DVOR
exhibition area
Vetrinjska ulica 30, Maribor

PRESENTATION:
Friday, 12 May 2023, from 10:00 to 20:00

The Maribor Secondary School of Design is presenting its products from the Design Technician course, Fashion Designer, Fashion Designer module at this year's SIJW. The garment as jewellery was designed and made by three students of the final fourth year.

Jana Lesičnik: Bloody Rain
Jana Lesičková was inspired by the film Carrie. The base fabric is black lycra, to which Jana added a woollen red yarn at the leg openings. The fashion accessories are a necklace and earrings made of faux pearls and red plexiglass in the shape of red drops. The basic colours are red, black and white.

Urška Žaberl: Lamproptera
Ur Ursula Żaberl finds her inspiration in insects, especially butterflies and dragonflies. She chose Laproptera Meges, an elegant Asian butterfly. She made a black bodice as a base, which is simple and elegant with a deep neckline. She then made black cotton trousers on which she attached butterflies and dragonflies in plexiglass in different sizes. A scarf in an organic wing shape completes the set. The whole creation is black, with flashes of pastel green, blue, yellow and pink.

Zoja Breznik: Gladiator fights
Inspired by gladiator fights, Zoja's product was inspired by them, so she chose their weapons as accessories. The wooden ornaments in the shape of an ellipse represent the spears and swords of the gladiators, and the chains represent the shields. For the bodice, she used black lycra, which is worn over the legs and fastened around the neck with a chain linked to a carabiner. The fashion accessory in silver can be worn around the neck or waist as desired.

Vetrinjska ulica 30, Maribor

SHOW:
Monday, 15 May 2023, from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00

ŠC Rogaška Slatina, GLASS
The Rogaška Slatina School Centre is a school with a tradition of more than 75 years of education for the glass professions. In the school year 2022/23, the school has 22 students enrolled in the 4-year glass technician programme and 16 students enrolled in the apprenticeship glassmaker programme. The glass technician programme is designed to give ample space for developing creative ideas and experimenting with glass. Students learn about hot glass forming techniques (blowing, drawing, pressing, casting, glass forming over an open flame, etc.) and cold glass decorating techniques (sandblasting, grinding, engraving, stained glass, fusion, etc.).
Under the guidance of their teachers, the students achieve excellent results both in the classroom and in the Vocational Baccalaureate, and they also participate in international events, such as the World Glass Cutting Championships held in Nizbor, Czech Republic, in 2022, where their student Teja Kobula took 3rd place. Their regular school work also includes the preparation of exhibitions - one such exhibition is Pre>tok, which is the result of a collaboration with design students from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, and which was first on show in 2023 at the Anina Gallery in Rogaška Slatina, and then in the showroom of Steklarna Rogaška in Ljubljana. They also regularly collaborate with the Slovenian Glassmakers' Association and exhibit at Strmol and Podsreda castles. Their students are involved in Erasmus + mobility (for several years in a row they have been doing a three-week practical training in Waterford, Ireland), and their regular school work also includes cooperation with renowned Slovenian artists.
Jewelry design is a very popular activity among future glass technicians.

Each piece of jewelry carries its own story of its creation, its meaning, its owner. Jewelry has enriched our lives for millennia, whether to adorn the body, to pin to clothing or, last but not least, to express power. It is the work of filigree makers, craftsmen, artists, who must have been able to satisfy the wishes of their clients and produce a useful, beautiful and functional piece that was worn by or dedicated to the higher instances, the gods of a time and age. In the middle of the 18th century, Maribor was home to one goldsmith and one jeweler. For this reason, there was no special guild in the town to unite jewelry makers, but the two craftsmen were included in the regional guilds of goldsmiths and jewelers, both based in Graz.

The Maribor Regional Museum holds many pieces of jewelry from different periods, from prehistoric times to the present day. Many interesting and beautiful pieces come from the graves in which they were placed as an heirloom, a souvenir of the journey to the afterlife. Are you interested in the trajectory of a particular archaeological find, in our case jewelry? From the site to the exhibition centre? On the walk you will discover 19th century photographs held by the Maribor Regional Archive, showing noblemen and especially noblewomen adorned with the jewelry of the time, the journey from manufacture to oblivion and the uncovering of the mysterious layers of history. We will try to find answers to the questions that arise when we look at these extraordinary finds: was jewelry part of everyday costume or part of the family fortune. Why, when and with whom did it go to the afterlife ... Images of jewelry that was fashionable long ago can serve as inspiration for new pieces.
